Sex is a very important part of our lives. For most men, thinking about sex starts very early, sometimes before puberty, and lasts until their last days. Sex is more than just the hormone-driven need to procreate, it is emotionally, psychologically, and relationally important and rewarding. It is an important part of a happy and well-adjusted life.

How do men know if they are sexually healthy?

Sexual health has to do with the state of well-being that allows a man to fully engage and enjoy sexual activity. This is not just physical, but psychological and relational, as well. Sexual health includes libido and function, which can be impacted by physical, mental, and emotional causes and concerns.

Male sexual health isn’t just the absence of disease, it can include other factors. It includes the prevention of transmission of diseases and treatment of those. It can also include the complications of infertility.

What is sexual health?

Sexual health is the approach to sexuality that is based on accurate knowledge, personal awareness, and acceptance, where behavior, values, and emotions are integrated and congruent with a person’s wider self-definition. Sexual health brings with it the ability to be intimate with a partner, to be able to communicate desires and boundaries, and be sexually functional. Sexual health includes personal attractiveness, competence, and freedom from sexual dysfunction. Sexual health sees sexuality as a positive force that enhances all aspects of life, physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually.

Why is my sex drive lower than normal?

It is natural for men to start to have a gradual decline in their sex drive as they get older. This can vary in each man, but most men will have some desire for sex into their 60s and 70s Sometimes the loss of desire can be due to an underlying condition. Things like stress, depression, alcoholism, drug use, and fatigue can play a part in the loss of desire. There can be specific medical conditions that impact sexual desire and function. These can come from an endocrine disorder or even from a medication side effect.

If you have lost a good amount of your sex drive, it might be a good idea to talk with a provider to see if it may be something physiological. There are medical conditions, such as testosterone, sleep apnea, or chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol that may be the cause. Having a good conversation with your provider can lead to the return of your desire and function and improve many aspects of your life.

What can cause orgasm problems in men?

There are different types of problems that can affect orgasms.  The types of organs issues that can happen are erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation (small amount of semen), premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, or anejaculation (orgasm without ejaculating). The causes vary for each person but can include medical issues, emotional or psychological issues, or complications with medicines that are being taken.

For men, particularly as they age, testosterone production can be a deciding factor in the male orgasm.  Thyroid problems, which often go undetected can also cause problems. As we get older, it is also more likely that we may be taking some medications and these often come with side effects, some of which cause problems with sexual function. It is always a good idea to consult a provider to get a better perspective on what can be the cause of concern.
